3.   Design a circuit that generates a 10 ns pulse using a shorted transmission line.

Answer

The circuit is shown in Figure 1. The line length is adjusted for a round trip delay of 10 nSec. The 50 ohm source impedance is chosen to eliminate the reflection of the returned wave to prevent pulses from bouncing back and forth between the shorted load and the line input.

The 5 volt 10 ns output pulse appears at the line input. Ten ns after the switch closes the voltage reflected from the short returns and subtracts from the input, resulting in zero volts after 10 ns.
