LaTeX Help Page
What is LaTeX? LaTeX is a very powerful document preparation system that is most often used for technical or scientific documents. It is particularly useful for mathematical expressions and equations. Unlike word processors such as Microsoft Word or MacWrite, LaTeX is not WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). Consequently, to format your document you need to specify commands in your files telling LaTeX how you want the document to look. There are complete free installations of LaTeX for most UNIX systems, as well as for Microsoft Windows. More information on setting up your own system to run LaTeX is available. LaTeX Basics The LaTeX file is an ordinary text file which must be created by you and must have a ".tex" extension. It contains the text, equations and graphics you wish in include in your document, as well as the commands which specify how you want the output to look. The best way to get started is to look at example .tex files and modify them to fit your needs. Some examples files are:
These files can be copied for use as templates. Undoubtedly, you will want to create an equation or format not found in these files. The LaTeX resource page has many links to information about using LaTeX. To find out how to generate the final document in various formats like postscript of pdf, see the Using LaTeX page. Department Styles The department provides two LaTeX styles that are specific to our department/university. They each have their own pages as well as detailed information about them.
