In the lab students use TIMS
(Telecommunication Instructional Modelling System) 301 Modeling systems, to look at the waveforms (using oscilloscope) explaining the
basic principles of modulation and demodulation (AM/FM). The results are then verified using Matlab.

Lab2 : Fourier Series and Low Pass Filtering
This lab introduces you to the TIMS 301 Modeling systems,
here is the documentation and the
specifications of the different modules.
Please Note: Grading/Report Format included in the Lab procedure
- MATLAB Assignment:
- Generate a sine wave of frequency 10 kHz.
- Design four low pass filters with cutoff frequencies: 60 kHz, 15 kHz, 10 kHz, and 5 kHz. In MATLAB you need to generate filter coefficients.
- Pass the 10 kHz sine wave through these four low pass filters, and plot each output separately.
- MATLAB Hints:
- To compute the filter coefficients:
[b] = fir1(filter_order,Cutoff_freq/(sampling_freq/2),'filter_type');
- For the filter Order I would suggest you use 100 to have a very neat result.
- Look at commands conv, and filter (For example: type help filter in the matlab's command window)

MATLAB Assignment
- Generate a 2KHz sinusoid with a Peak to Peak Voltage of 2V (+/- 1V ),
and generate a quantized signal when N=8 and N=16 levels.
Calculate SQNR, Signal to Quantization Noise Ratio.
-
MATLAB Results for Quantization should look like:
8 levels and
16 levels
